David Lewis Bromoil Paper
David Lewis's Bromoil Paper is a double weight non-supercoated chlorobromide paper with a printing speed of ISO 320. The paper has a thick emulsion with a smooth matt surface and has a normal contrast (grade # 2). This chlorobromide emulsion produces incredible gradation of tone and shadow detail when developed in amidol.
After bleaching the emulsion produces a coin-like relief, reminiscent of the bromoil paper from the 1930's! It is the only photographic paper on the market today that has the coin-like swelling relief!

David Lewis Bromoil Paper Developer
Our new print developer has been expressly created for our bromoil paper. It may also be used to print with contemporary supercoated photographic papers.
This propriety formula is a very soft developer which gives a beautiful gradation of tone from the deepest shadow to the highlights. The tonal range is exquisite!
This developer is similar to the old Ansco 120 formula, however the advantage of this new product is the degree in which the depth of the shadows are printed. This is evident when you bleach out your deep print: you will observe that the shadows containing the heaviest silver deposit are bleached out of the print quicker and with greater ease then when printing with a similar developer.
The developer is available in powder form to make a stock solution of 2 litres. We recommend a working dilution of 1:3 and a development time of 3 minutes.
143.2 gms. to make a stock solution of 2 litres: $13.95
Plain Hypo
It is imperative that you use a 10% plain hypo (sodium thiosulfate) solution for fixing the print subsequent to development and after the bleaching operation. A measuring cup is included with your order to make up the correct 10% solution.
1600 gms. plain (penta) hypo $17.25
Bromoil Brushes
Genuine Pure Hog Hair Brush, Finest Quality - Size 16: 1 1/2": $80.95
These brushes are made of long fine pure hog hair, stag foot in shape and beveled. The major part of the stag foot shape toe is formed by the natural tips of the hair. The remaining hair towards the heel of the brush is composed of the natural tips and follicle ends. None of the hair is cut! The hog hair brush is recommended for the initial inking of the matrix and where broad effects are desired to maintain a course etching like quality.
The quality of the brush is as important as the quality of the ink. We believe our fitch hair* brushes have no equal and they are superior to the bear and mixed hair brushes. These are made from the hair of the pole-cat, and the hair is arranged in such a manner that the bevel is beautifully domed. The colour of our fitch hair may be either brown or black depending on the season and area of habitat. We absolutely guarantee their quality and authenticity. All dimensions are taken at the base of the brush and size #16 IS copper ferruled with varnished handles.
Our new line of marble hair brushes are designed for working on small areas of the bromoil print that require selective hopping or a final application of pigment to a specific area with a very soft brush. They are less expensive, yet very similar in quality to the fitch hair brush producing the same fine grain effect.
Size 0/0: 1/4" dia. or 8mm $17.25
Size 4/0: 3/8" dia. or 10mm $20.50

Size 12/0: 5/8" dia. or 16mm $30.25

The Lewis Bromoil Transfer Press
The Lewis Bromoil Transfer Press is the only etching press in the world that has been specially designed and manufactured for you, the bromoil worker. We hope that you will soon experience the pleasure and satisfaction of pulling a bromoil transfer from our press.
We use only the finest quality hand machined parts, guaranteeing the bromoil worker ease of operation and trouble free use. The press will accommodate matrices for transferring up to 11" (27.9 cm.) in width. To eliminate uneven pressure we have incorporated a single machined screw T-handle adjustment to produce an even inline pressure within the two 1.5" diameter rollers. This press does not require metal plates nor a printer's blanket. Instead it uses either two photo blotters or bristle board for ease of operation.

Dimensions: 12 x 12 x 25"
Platform: 25 x 14 3/4"
Warranty: All presses carry a written 5 year warranty under normal use against defects in manufacturing.

Miscellaneous Items
# 6 Bromoil Spotting Brush - $12.50
Made from pure Kolinsky sable hair, this brushe is ideal for spotting and retouching the finished bromoil or transfer.
3/4" Border Clearing Brush - $13
This brush is perfect for cleaning up the excess pigment from the borders of the print after inking has been completed. A must for every worker.
Lewis Stiffening Powder - 10g: $6, 20g $12
This clay-based powder is designed to stiffen our line of color pigment inks. When the ink is too soft for application onto the matrix, add a small amount of the powder to the ink and mix thoroughly. The addition of the powder will bring it to the correct tack condition to match the swelling of the gelatin.
Lewis Bleacher Kit - $19
Lewis bleacher requires no acid bath and when mixed into stock solution it will last indefinitely. Only the purest of chemicals are used. The copper sulfate, potassium bromide, and potassium dichromate are supplied in powder form. Mixing instructions are enclosed with the bleacher.
Individually:
Copper Sulfate: 100g - $10.50
Potassium Bromide: 100g - $8
Potassium Dichromate: 10g - $6
Lewis Clear Oil Medium - 2oz. bottle $8.50
This slow drying medium has been specially formulated for our colour pigments, for thinning or letting down the pigment when detail is required in the highlights. Unlike other oils which are yellow in body, Lewis's medium is a clear oil thus maintaining the integrity of the pigment without degrading it's colour. This oil should also be used with the black pigment for letting it down in the final stages of inking when detail is required in the higher tonal values.
Lewis Amber Oil Medium - 2oz. bottle $8.50
This light amber oil is specially formulated to soften the hard black pigment when it is too stiff and refuses to go on the matrix. In most circumstances only one drop is required to bring the pigment into the proper consistency for application. When the matrix is nearing completion and the ink is reluctant to bring out the detail in the higher tonal values, use the clear oil medium.
4" Palette Knife - $8.50
This knife is of the straight variety and is ideally suited for mixing the pigment into it's proper consistency.
Chamois - $8.50
Very few chamois's have the ability to absorb the water entirely from the surface of the matrix. Our new chamois has proven to be superior to all others available on the market today . It is lint free and will help prevent debris from being deposit on the matrix during the ink-up.
Bromoil Brush Soap - $4.50
The hog hair brush should be cleaned periodically with our special formulated pure soap. To clean the brush, first dip it into a jar of warm water and then apply the brush to the soap as one would a shaving brush. After the brush has created a lather, rinse it under the faucet with warm water and then hang it up to dry. The soap contains special oils that will be absorbed into the brush hairs to keep them soft and pliable for future use.
